Water Science

Did you know that the human brain is composed of 70% water, the lungs are nearly 90% water, and 83% of our blood is water? That only 0.3% of the earth’s water is usable by humans? Or that in 2000 the United States withdrew 408 billion gallons of water per day from the earth (48% of which went to hydroelectric power plants)? The US Geological Survey has a website devoted to teaching children about water.

There you can:

Vote for your favorite body of water (I’ve always been partial to geysers).
Investigate the water cycle in over 50 languages.
Quiz yourself on your knowledge of hydrology and water properties.
Find out whether rain drops are really shaped like tear drops.

Take some time and explore the site to learn more about the basic science of water.

2. Make a Scarf. Follow our easy instructions to make a beautiful and unique scarf. Wear one to show your support for those in need, and sell a few to your family and friends.

3. Donate. Give the money you raised from your scarf to a worthy charity (See our list of Resources). Even a little bit will change the lives of those who have no access to clean water.

Repeat until everyone has access to safe, clean water.
